The International Genealogical Index [fiche] has a column headed BATCH NUMBER, and beside it a column headed SERIAL SHEET. Corresponding data, appears on the screen for the CDROM versions of the IGI. The screen will also show, the microfilm serial number.
For each IGI entry there is a specific Batch No. and Serial Sheet No. These are coded addresses for the original data, usually several lines of a Register that has been filmed by the LDS Church.
If you want a copy of that entry then you may order it from Utah. Order Sheet #31831, "Request for Photocopies: IGI and Sources" is available freely at LDS Family History Centres. By air, the turnaround time is about 4/6 weeks.
You must include on the form, the full coded address for each item. If you have used the fiche style IGI, then you will have to consult the Batch Number Index, a small set of fiche which converts the Batch Number into an Input Source [microfilm] serial No. This is the number needed in Utah, to quickly and reliably find your Entry.
Most Batch Numbers, have 6 digits and an alpha prefix of C or M, for Christening or Marriage, for example. Images of these REGISTER ENTRIES may be had from LDS at Salt Lake City very cheaply, US $2 each.
Some Batch Numbers have NO alpha prefix but are of 7 digits eg 8604703. If you find such a number against a name you are researching then you may have an exciting time ahead.....
These non-alpha numbers, identify Patron Submissions. A Researcher, has provided the entry from his/her own research: which may for example be from an old Bible, or from a register not microfilmed.
The first two digits of the Batch No. represent the year. e.g., in the case of Batch 8604703 a patron gave the information in 1986.
The copy of that Patron's submission will cost you US25 cents. The order form has space for 8 requests ie US$2 worth. The versatile form facilitates the ordering of other types of sources too.
The Patron's submission will include postal address and sometimes, other Entries additional to the one you requested. The Patron may be from your own family e.g. a distant cousin with whom you will exchange details.
