A few tips for a successful visit to the FHC.
Note from the editor: Most of this applies to visits to other places
as well, e.g. New Register House.
-
do some preparation - family group sheets showing names, dates, places
-
take writing materials - pencils & paper
-
get there early - especially if there is a particular reader you want to
use.
-
settle to your work quickly & quietly - there are others who wish to
stay focused & don't want distractions
-
spend some time - maybe several visits - just browsing through the local
holdings which the LDS have purchased or patrons donated
-
if you see anything of interest - ie a set of microfiche - make sure you
copy down the Title & microfiche #s & where it is located in the
drawers so that you can return to it on your next visit
-
Scotland Locality Catalogue - ask to see the microfiche - take note of
the subject headings & what is available for the country as a whole
& then your particular county - read the descriptions - does it fit
in with the time frame for your research
-
then when YOU are satisfied - order films
-
make a brief note of WHY you have ordered the film - surprising how many
people forget - ie SCOTLAND, 1861 Census, Lanarkshire, Parish of Shotts,
Joe BLOGGS - there's usually enough space on the order form.
-
If you are reliant on reading glasses - do remember to take them
When venturing into a new country of research - search the Locality
Catalogue - the processes are the same - just different records.
It's up to the individual to become proficient in their area of research
- you are the expert on your family.
