How do I get a certificate?

The question is often posed: "I know that so-and-so was born/married/died in Auchleshuggy in 18xx. How do I get hold of the certificate?"

The following are suggestions as how to procede. Note that this is just for Scotland.

1855 - 1952

  1. Go to ScotlandsPeople, (till 1902 for births, 1927 for marriages, 1952 for deaths) pay your 6 pounds, find the entry on the index, download the image (costs one of those pounds)  or order on line (costs another 10 pounds). or
  2. Contact the GRO(S) (address and other contact details on Genuki http://www.genuki.org.uk/), specify what you want and either send them a cheque or pay by credit card. or
  3. Pay a researcher to go in and look up the data for you, transcribe it and email or post it to you.
The last can be  the cheapest, except for downloading the image.

1903 - present

For deaths post 1952, births post 1902 and marriages 1928 - present, then options 2 and 3 are still possible.

pre 1855

There are no certificates at all.
