The Devil in the Bearpit

by Alan Paterson

3 couple Reel for a 3-couple set

Variant on ladies chain figure and an unexpected entrance to Poussette

Bars
1 - 8 1st and 2nd couples, taking hands on the sidelines, set and dance right hands across half way. Set again and dance back left hands across half way. 1st man and 2nd lady remain facing down/up the set.
9 - 12 1st lady and 2nd man changes place with the right hand while their partners cast down/up one place. Turn new person with the left hand (as for ladies’ chain).
13 - 16 While 1st man and 2nd lady cast for 2 bars down/up and then wait 2 bars, 1st lady and 2nd man turn by the right hand 1 and three-quarter times to finish with 2nd couple in 1st place and 1st couple with both hands joined in the centre of the set. 3rd couple step in.
17 - 24 1st and 3rd couples change places with the Poussette
25 - 32 2nd, 3rd and 1st couples circle round and back.
Repeat from new places.

This dance was devised on 30 October 1998, inspired by the sudden need to have a dance for a 3 couple set, containing (mostly) standard formations and to be danced to the music for Deil Amang the Tailors

The Devil in the title is, of course, the one who has finished with the Tailors and is now in Berne, Switzerland, visiting the city’s chief tourist attraction.
